George Pettifar was born in London in December 1927 and educated fitfully as various state schools in London and Somerset. He joined the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) as an army cadet at 13 and became a Regular Fusilier at 17.

After moving through the ranks to become a Regimental Sergeant Major, he was commissioned and retired from active service aged 55 as a Lieutenant Colonel. After retirement from the regular army, he was re-employed in a retired officer’s post at The Tower of London until he was 65. He was a Presiding Magistrate at Hampstead and Clerkenwell Courts for some years. He has been married to Beverley since 1956 and has two children and five grandchildren.
